Test Uncertainty Ratio (TUR) Calculator

Calculate the Test Uncertainty Ratio to confirm your calibration standard is accurate enough to verify the tolerance of the instrument being calibrated.

Why TUR Matters

When calibrating an instrument, the reference standard used must be significantly more accurate than the instrument's own tolerance — otherwise the calibration itself introduces meaningful risk of a false pass or false fail. The Test Uncertainty Ratio (TUR) quantifies this relationship.

TUR = Tolerance (± value) / Measurement Uncertainty of the Standard (± value) Some organizations express this as: TUR = Tolerance / (2 × Standard's Uncertainty), when uncertainty is expressed as a full-width value

Typical Acceptance Criterion

TURInterpretation
≥ 4:1Generally acceptable — commonly cited industry minimum
3:1 – 4:1Marginal — may require additional guard-banding or risk assessment
< 3:1Generally not acceptable without additional justification/uncertainty analysis

This calculator applies the standard TUR formula for educational and preliminary planning purposes. Final calibration acceptance decisions should follow your site's approved metrology procedure, including any required guard-banding, uncertainty budget analysis, or ILAC/ISO 17025 requirements for the calibration provider.
